If you’re passionate about educational equity and social justice, The Discovery Center is looking for innovative and passionate change makers to join our team for the 2016 Fall Residential Camp Program! (September 2016-November 2016).We bring 5th & 6th grade students together from urban and suburban/rural areas for a three to five-day overnight experience. Counselors and teachers facilitate diverse groups as they learn to live, work, and play together. Students gain an understanding and respect for diversity and collectively develop tools to fight racism, classism and other forms of discrimination and exclusion.
We are currently looking for Residential Teachers, Residential Diversity Counselors and a Operations Director. If you read below you’ll find descriptions of each position.
Residential Diversity Counselor: Residential Diversity Counselors (RDCs) serve as team leaders that facilitate team building activities and teach language arts, social studies, and diversity lessons under the supervision of a certified teacher. As a group leader, RDC’s sit with and monitor a group at meals, facilitate dialogue, help foster new friendships, discourage cliques, belay team members on the climbing wall, lead singing and dancing activities, serve as role models, manage wake up and bedtimes, and build strong relationships with students.
Operations Director: The Operations Director (OD) should be detail-oriented, flexible, and versatile–with excellent creative problem solving skills. The OD will support the overall camp operation by managing program groups, cabin assignments, registrations, and all daily camp operations using our camp management software. The Operations Director may live on or off-site.
Residential Teacher: Residential Teachers (RT) focus on the delivery of our Science, Technology, Engineering, & Mathematics (STEM) Social Studies and Diversity curriculum. In addition, RTs will be performing all of the same duties as a Residential Diversity Counselor when needed.
